Pandemic learning has been tough on so many students, and my students are not an exception. Over half of my students have been distance learning for the past 18 months, and they are struggling coming back to the classroom this year. Currently, students have the option to sit where they choose, but their choices are slim. We have about three yoga balls that they can choose to sit on, otherwise they have regular tables and chairs to sit on. These traditional chairs don't provide any sensory stimulation to the students who need it, so those students end up rocking on their chairs or leaning back and end up getting hurt.
These flexible seating options would provide sensory stimulation to those students who need it most. These seating options also give students choice in the room. When students were learning at home, they had choice where to do their work, and now that they are back in the classroom, I would like to provide that choice for them. That choice gives them responsibility for their learning which fifth graders crave.
