Most of our lower-grade students (Pre-K–2) are Multilingual Language Learners. The kids who are receiving bilingual speech and language therapy are mostly Spanish speakers. They feel more motivated and welcome when people communicate with them or read stories in their first language first. Unfortunately, our speech and language therapy room is lacking in bilingual therapy materials (cards, language games), especially bilingual books. After 4 years, our speech and language team was given a room with some space for a small shelf. I would like to create a bilingual corner in our therapy room. With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of bilingual books or therapy materials that will provide them with opportunities to improve their communication skills both in their primary language and boost the learning of the English language including vocabulary, syntax and comprehension. These bilingual books include stories but also books about diversity since they come from different Hispanic countries. These books will help them to build respect for themselves and people from different cultures. They also will help them to build the self-esteem that they need. Specific bilingual speech and language applications in the iPad will provide the kids with more opportunities to learn and practice the targeted language skills in a fun way. Interactive apps in phonological awareness, syntax, sound production, reading comprehension, receptive and expressive language can be downloaded. They also can pick up the activities and have modeling of using vocabulary and language in different contexts through videos under the therapist’s direction. The best way to increase communication skills is through exposure and these books, therapy materials and interactive apps will help my students grow stronger in their speech and language both in their first language and English. This project will help enrich their experiences.
