I have practiced mindfulness in my classes, and the student response this last week was, "Please have more mindful moments." I allow them some choice in their mindfulness to either journal, draw, color, or listen to the music/instructions during the first 5-8 minutes of class. Students recognize their need for peace and centeredness. Our mindful moments help create a calming environment and prepare students for deeper discussions on social issues which we approach in 4th quarter. Inner peace produces greater assurance which opens doors to articulate personal thoughts and experiences to an inclusive environment. While the materials here appear polarizing, they serve a great intertwining purpose for students' future perspectives and purpose.
