Many of my students have not grown up in an environment where reading is "normal." They have parents who place little value in the written word. This is why I encourage my students to read by starting off class with silent reading time. My students have loved the opportunity to spend five or ten minutes of class reading. When a student finishes their work early, you'd typically expect to see them pull out their phone. Many of my students pull out their silent reading book instead. I have tried to provide my students with a variety of books in our classroom library. Most of the books were bought with my own money. However, the books currently available to them are lacking in both number and diversity. My students often comment on how the school library is sparse in contemporary novels that they'd consider reading for fun, and that the books in our classroom library appeal to them much more. By expanding that library with different genres and discussion topics, I hope to keep my students engaged during our silent reading time and make them into lifetime lovers of reading and learning. My students may only get one life to live, but, as I keep telling them, they can experience a million lives through books.
