Our county district schools have purchased an online remediation program called ALEKS for our level 1 and low level 2 students. The expectation from the county office is that these students are using the ALEKS program a minimum of two hours per week with the goal that the students are on this program 3-5 hours per week. The program has been proven to improve math skills when used by the students weekly. We currently have five double-block Algebra 1 classes spread between three teacher/co-teacher classrooms. Our high school has been utilizing testing laptop carts that are temporarily loaned to the math department when not needed for testing: however, we still do not have enough laptops for each double-block teacher to have a full set of computers to use in their classroom and they must share. Additionally, with the ever-increasing need for online testing due to state assessment retakes throughout the year, online nine weeks exams for most subjects, and the end of year testing requirements, the double block classes often do not have access to the testing laptop carts and the other math classes rarely have the opportunity to use them. We need at least one dedicated laptop cart for the math department with 15 additional computers to ensure that the students in these double block classes can access the ALEKS program for the required minimum of two hours per week. The additional laptops should allow us to come closer to the goal of 3-5 hours per week access for these students. Having a classroom set of computers for each of these double block teachers will also allow the teachers to incorporate other technology-based lessons using DeltaMath, DESMOS, or similar programs.
