Student groups participate in an engineering competition with limitations and rewards that stimulate a real world situation. Groups design and then build a machine using a limited number of K'Nex (worldwide building supplies are short) that must perform a specific function (lift a certain amount of weight 10cm). Once they have submitted a design proposal, they "order" the pieces they need for the build using a cost sheet. Last minute pieces needed to complete the build are double the "price," (rush shipping is expensive). Design proposals are judged by the quality of the proposal itself, how well the machine performs (how much force is needed to lift the weight) and how much the pieces "cost." Successful designs all earn passing grades (they don't get fired from their engineering firm) but the winning design gets the highest grade (their firm is awarded the project!)
