My students struggle in and out of the classroom. In addition to their urban setting of over 80% poverty, these middle-schoolers are identified as having one or more learning disabilities. They attend most classes with the general education population, and receive group services to meet individualized needs once per day in my class. Like most tweens and teens, they can be stubborn when it comes to completing classwork they don't understand; especially when trying to hide an LD that separates them from their peers. Providing these students with resources that work specifically for their needs makes it possible for them to keep pace.
