Evidence shows that language skills are effectively addressed when students read and discuss books. Books provide ample opportunities to practice decoding, comprehension skills, asking and answering questions, and retelling information. When students see their own cultures and ethnicities represented in books, they can feel seen, validated, and connected to their learning. When they also see cultures and ethnicities of teachers and classmates represented in materials, it can open their minds and hearts to those with different backgrounds and practices from their own. Symbol boards (laminated for protection and re-usability), tailor-made with vocabulary symbols to accompany each book, provide an effective alternative mode of communication for those students whose verbal abilities are limited. Laminated symbol boards can help these students both learn from, and participate in, discussions and activities similarly to their verbal peers.
