I bet you have a novel you read in school that you loved. One that the characters felt like friends or family who struggled with problems you understood. A book that you put down, but left you wanting more and looking for the next great adventure that can be found in a book. This set of books will create a literature rich environment for my students to find that title that sparks a love of reading that motivates learning for a lifetime. Real books equals real learning. Yes, students may need practice reading with small portions of text from a textbook, but without the authentic experience of reading full length literature reading can become dull, boring, and meaningless to kids. Worse yet, without the chance to practice skills by applying them to authentic reading, learning is lost. A classroom library with proven high interest titles is an irreplaceable tool in keeping kids engaged.
