We will be reading Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson. Our reading will culminate with a Socratic circle discussion about racial and social injustice, along with an essay focusing on argumentation. The theme of racial and social injustice is relevant in our school because we are ethnically diverse. Around 40% of our students are minority students. Over 50% are eligible for free and reduced-price lunches. This unit will be used to teach higher-order thinking skills by discussing principles and concepts of racial injustice and learning more about those who fight to right these wrongs. Along with the discussion, students will increase their argumentation skills through writing. This book is a young adult adaptation of the true story of Bryan Stevenson, who fought to overturn the convictions of innocent citizens who were treated unfairly because of their race or class. After reading, discussing, and writing, students will learn how to use their voices and see the importance of advocating for others who are unfairly targeted, ultimately illuminating the importance of each individual being a catalyst for change.
