The TEACCH independent learning system was developed for students with special needs. The purpose is to increase the time a student is able to work without assistance from an adult. The activities can be as simple as a "put in" task for lower students to "drafting a letter and addressing an envelope" task for higher-level students. The system itself requires an organized, labeled shelving structure as well as a variety of hands-on tasks. Students who use this research-based program have shown improvements in increased time in the general education setting as well as greater success in future job settings, as it teaches life-long skills. Many of my current students lack the skills required to successfully be mainstreamed with their typical peers. As increased time in general education is the ultimate goal of my program, it is essential that I build a system to teach these critical skills.
