We are hoping to provide an opportunity for our students to step out of the classroom and get their hands dirty in a community garden. A community garden is an excellent opportunity to provide a fresh air classroom experience, with excellent cross-curricular potential. We will be discussing the soil and climate in our native Texas and what plants we can successfully support. We will use math to determine how we can best utilize our space, develop a budget, and measure our growth. Science will be a focus, as we reinforce the biology of the plant cycle, the water cycle, and the unique biosphere that will be created. We will release stress as we dig our hands in the soil. We will savor the fresh fruits and vegetables that we grow and reflect on the work that went into nurturing them to that point. We will appreciate the beauty of the world around us as we learn outside the confines of standardized tests and cramped desks.
