I teach in a district with high rates of poverty, meaning many students come to school hungry in the mornings. Even the students who come from healthy, stable homes get hungry throughout the day, and research shows that eating something at least every two hours helps us maintain focus and learn. With all of that in mind, I keep snacks in my class that are available to students who might not have eaten breakfast or just feel hungry to the point where they can't focus well. Having these snacks on hand makes students feel safe and cared for in my class.
