I am requestioning indoor recess toys to teach, encourage and foster independence and creativity with my Second-Grade students. The Legos will encourage the students to think and create a model showing their creativity. Playdough is another example of children using a different texture to stimulate and encourage the creative mind. The children in my class, have not had a "normal" school year. When the pandemic hit (March 2020) these children were in kindergarten, At that time all students were at home on Distant Learning for the remainder of the year. Last year(2020-2021-their first-grade year), for the first 1/2 of the year some children were on the hybrid model (attending school every other day) while others were on complete Distant Learning (not in the brick-and-mortar building). Then in January 2021, hybrid children returned to school on a full-time basis, however Distant Learning students continued at home. I am. providing this background, because this is the first opportunity the children have been able to experience a traditional school year. Students are learning to be self-sufficient, and play/learn creatively in groups as well as independently. I do not have materials for children to play with independently, so these materials will help them to do so. Also, at this point, my children are disappointed when we are unable to go outside for recess, because they do not enjoy staying indoor recess. In conclusion, the free play addresses the student's social/emotional needs.
