Many of my students like independent reading time in the library. Independent reading time is a time that students can follow their own interests and curiosities, instead of reading something that is assigned to them. Students get to know themselves better by having time on their own to explore books and the ideas they generate. I have students that will read a graphic novel in a small group with each student reading a different character. I have older 5th and 4th grade students who like to read to first grade and kindergarten students. I recently had a 3rd grade student share with her class why she enjoyed reading a book she had recently finished during independent reading time. After she spoke other students were able to share with the class what they read. I also have students of all ages that will ask me if I knew a certain fact about a planet, an animal, a football statistic or a food fact. I will always thank them when they teach me about something I did not know which is often.
