My students are interested in studying indoor air quality at the 3 campuses they encounter daily. We have a unique opportunity at our College High School to host a group of students that are highly motivated and interested in learning. My students want to put these air quality sensors in 4 different classrooms to monitor the air quality with and without students, with different numbers of students, and with different sizes of classrooms. After we collect our baseline data, we will clone and add plants to classrooms, and study the effects to the air quality in those classrooms. We will then use that data to make recommendations for all classrooms in our high school collaborative. We hope to expand our study year by year until every classroom has quality air. We think the subject of air quality is particularly relevant with COVID-19 and the focus we have had on breathing in general. We are also interested to see if student alertness and engagement, increase as a result of the added plants and reduced toxins in the air (if the plants do in fact reduce toxins in the air). These students will use the data we collect to critically evaluate the carbon cycle, nitrogen cycle, and other nutrient cycles that occur all around us all the time, that we do not even think about. This opportunity provides students with a practical hands on application of topics learned in class in a focused enrichment opportunity. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide!
