My students receiving individual sketchbooks paired with an inspiring (and therapeutic) class environment has numerous tangible, social and emotional benefits. Each child will be able to use their own sketchbook to complete their instant activity--the first illustration activity they complete every day when they arrive. Their sketchbooks will also serve as a space where they can practice techniques being used in class for current projects, as well as improving skills from previous assignments. From the lessons on line types and the other elements of art, students will now have a centralized place to practice and review art concepts and build. Their sketchbooks also enable me to interact with each of them without the embarrassment and exposure a single sheet of paper on the table may bring. I'm able to review their current illustrations, observe their technique one-on-one, make corrections and suggestions, and refer to prior skills they're now applying to their present assignments. Having these sketchbooks for the entire school year serves as motivation for what's possible in the future and a reminder of how much they've grown as artists since the first day of school. Personal sketchbooks allow students to begin telling their individual life's story through art when words aren't enough. It is an on-going conversation of their hopes and dreams. The fantasy art garden decorations create a liberating space that enables students to feel relaxed, focused and open to inspiration. The hanging clouds, draped leaves and multi-color flowers sweeping the ceiling can give the feeling that they've been temporarily transported to another world--one of endless possibilities. It is the combination of classroom decorations and their sketchbooks that allow students to explore and innovate. After all, our entire lives are surrounded by art. Why not help the next artists that will decide what that looks like!
