The books that are gifted to my second grade class of 25 African American students will encourage them to read more and reach higher reading levels. I have purchased books for them to read but my funds are limited. I have destroyed many of my personal books sanitizing them for the next student to use. The pages end up crinkly and warped. I want them to be excited about reading as many of them are below level in this area. Students see and hear me read to them and have said that they want to read like me. I tell them that to become a better reader you have to read more, practice. Practice doesn't make perfect, it makes you better. I've explained to my class that you need reading for EVERY SUBJECT. My ultimate goal is to have my second graders visit Kindergarten and first grade classrooms as a reading volunteer. The smiles that come across their faces are heartwarming.
