Strong literacy instruction is so very important to the success of a child's reading life and their love of learning. A student's elementary years are spent learning the skills necessary to become strong readers so they can apply those skills to the rest of their life as they read to learn. When an educator has an accurate understanding of where each student is in their "learning to read" journey, it allows for the opportunity to develop lessons that engage and challenge students. Having these four iPads as a tool in our reading department would assist us in accurately determining each student's strengths and weaknesses as well as assist them with setting their own personal reading goals. Our reading intervention team aims to meet with each child individually throughout the school year. Our current method requires a lot of time out of the classroom preparing the necessary assessments, printing paper copies, entering each child's individual data, and keeping large files. These iPads would allow us to use a program to EFFICIENTLY meet with each child in grades K-5 individually (approximately 390 students) in order to read with them and continuously document their growing needs and progress. They would allow us to systematically upload student data and analyze instructional needs. I believe it is our job as educators to identify student's individual needs. Having this technology in our reading department will help effectively personalize reading instruction for each student in in our K-5 classrooms leading to greater gains in their reading life.
