Hi! I am a new counselor, entering a space that hasn't been worked in with students since March, 2020 due to covid. My hopes are to make this space feel alive, calming, welcoming and joyful for the students that come here.
The toys, books and art materials I hope to get are to keep my office filled with books, activities and visuals that will help support children problem solve, regulate emotions, talk about their feelings and work and play well with others. I want to be able to create visual strategies that kids can use outside of their counseling sessions in their classrooms. I want to be able to have materials to allow for various play activities: imaginary and cooperative play skills are so important in our younger aged children. Play is so important to help them learn and is an integral part of my work with them. Identity work is also important for kids to feel welcome and affirmed by both me and their peers. Having books with characters that represent all different families and cultural backgrounds can be so affirming for our students and will help with cultural responsive practices and learning about ourselves and others.
