I am requesting materials, activities and games which will help close the achievement gap by giving students early, meaningful opportunities to practice their standards-driven skills in reading and math. Practice makes better. Fun practice creates learning magic.
In my classroom, we strive to bring magic to learning. My students have a variety of background knowledge, but they all need the foundational skills for reading.
Students can use these hands-on games to make observations of and master letter-sound correspondences. They can share their learning and teach their peers. These tools would allow flexibility in working independently and with teacher support.
The white boards will be used in whole class and small group instruction for play doh phonics. We use play doh to represent the sound and write the letters that represent those sounds.
White boards would also be used for math instruction for students to share their math thinking.
The pocket chart would be used to incorporate a strategy from my GLAD training for language acquisition. Students would work together to build and discuss cooperative sentences and paragraphs.
Students will be able extend this knowledge into having discussions regarding the structure of sentences and build their own. Students will be beholding the foundation to reading by working with me, their peers, and parent volunteers.
The math number line and board will help students visualize the concept of place value which is an important number sense skill. These tools would be used both in whole group and small group instruction to give students an opportunity for hands-on understanding.
Funding this project will allow students to have a level playing field compared to students who have access to learning opportunities. Funding this project will contribute to huge gains in learning.
