The number line most of the time is underutilized in the primary and upper elementary grades. The number line is an excellent tool to help students with addition and subtraction, fractions like ½ and ¼, and with relative magnitude and position of numbers. I have noticed that the number line gives students the opportunity to foster number sense and operational proficiency. That’s the reason why I consider it important to have the number line accessible to my students all the time during instruction. By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student understanding, you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement. Another key manipulative in the math classroom is the base-10 blocks. They provide excellent conceptual understanding, since place value is what governs all arithmetic operations. An understanding of the properties of operations also leads to better understanding of place value and computation. The place value blocks and number lines allow me to plan lessons for whole and small group instruction. I will be able to see exactly what they are doing and understanding, as well as providing immediate feedback.
