At this age, it is developmentally inappropriate to try and require children who have never been in school or structured settings to sit and trace or sit and recite letters and numbers all day long. We do workstations to allow independent practice for students to work on specific skills, so these items will help them be active participants in their learning and have fun with it. I heavily utilize Teachers Pay Teachers to build paper model puzzles and workstations to develop their alphabet knowledge and numerical skills. The goal is to have more tangible items to engage the scholars’ interest and handle objects other than paper and pencils all day. They can learn in ways that fit their specific learning styles. Play-based learning will enable students to have a choice and allows them to explore with less teacher involvement. With self-correcting puzzles, students use their critical thinking skills themselves and work their brains to figure out the correct answers. Who we are in this world reflects our position in the community, so we must have dress-up costumes for dramatic play so that students can model what good citizens do and how the world works daily. Having access to magnetic tool kits, sand tables, etc., will allow them to understand what attraction in positive and negative is naturally through exploration.
