Students will read Dr. Martin in a whole class group setting. This text will be used to help a diverse group of students with learning disabilities work on literacy skills and promotion of discussion of the following themes: social justice, identity, and features of civilization (or lack thereof). This text will capture my students attention, keep them engaged, and encourage them to think, reflect, and ask questions about real world issues that are relative to their lives. Students will decide what the features of civilization are before reading Dr. Martin, then decide whether or not Dr. Martin exhibits what it means to be civilized. Ultimately, there are many aspects of civilization that can be discussed, but how civilized are we in a world with racism and lack of social justice? My students will explore this in addition to defining what it means to be civilized.
