Because research reveals that independent reading is the best way for students to build reading stamina and to practice reading strategies, I have launched a new reading program in my classroom. The program centers around student choice, and with your donation, I hope to build a classroom library that is full of diverse voices and high quality titles that will excite students. Instead of asking students to read at home each night for 20 minutes, my classes have protected reading time during the school day. This shift ensures that all students (regardless of their after school activities and responsibilities) are reading and practicing essential skills.
