All of my students are young men who are in jail. They range in age from 10 to 19. It is hard enough to get boys interested in English, let alone get them interested while they’re in jail! My students told me they like real life stories and “street” stories. I searched our acceptable literary list for the county and found these books! We have already previewed one book, and the boys seem very interested. They are even taking turns reading aloud! I am working in all the other literary elements with these books so that they have well-rounded projects that help them work towards passing their state tests!
