This project is designed to transform a classroom into a forum in which students can curl up, relax and enjoy reading short story genres that feature action, adventure, comedy, drama, fable, fantasy, history, mystery, science fiction, biography and satire. Flexible and comfortable seating options will promote active student engagement and collaboration in literature circles, a small group initiative, in which students enhance their reading comprehension skills by analyzing short stories with the toolkit of plot structure analysis. In this context, they will probe the elements, the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, conflict, resolution, protagonist and antagonist, that bind the short story as a work of prose fiction. The atmospherics engendered by flexible and cushiony seating will favorably affect the extent to which students value reading and enhance their knowledge of story elements. Flexible seating will inure a sense of choice and agency in the classroom environment in which students are empowered by the roles of discussion director, literary luminary, illustrator, vocabulary enricher, summarizer and connector that they assume in viable literature circles that foster collaboration. The sites of inquiry proposed for literature circles include works of literature authored by Langston Hughes, Richard Wright, Sandra Cisneros, Isaac Asimov, Virginia Hamilton, Anton Chekhov, Gary Soto and others.
