This year, we will be focused on identity and representation in 9th and 10th grade. We are trying to answer the questions: Why does representation matter? and How does understanding my own identity help me to empathize and connect with others? While much of our content is focused on these topics, there are, of course, some things that students will wish to delve deeper in for themselves. We want to be able to encourage this independence and choice when it comes to reading. I want all students to be able to read a book that is interesting to them: whether that is because they are seeing themselves reflected through the pages of the book, or because they are learning about a new perspective. Not all students will feel connected to the whole-class content, and it's important to me that they're able to access books that matter to them regardless.
