Writing is one of the most difficult components of the curriculum to teach and learn for students. The best way for students to become great writers is to be engaged in their writing and to continue to practice writing. An engaging writing activity that I would like to implement this year is to have all of the fourth graders in our school "adopt a soldier". I have already made connections with a few troops and have addresses and names of soldiers that have been away from home for months/years that would LOVE to read and receive letters from back at home. Having students adopt a soldier by sending letters and holiday crafts, will not only build strong writers but also create relationships from a distance and lasting memories for years to come. Students will read articles in the Time for Kids Magazine and practice summarizing fun facts that they learned as they write to their soldier biweekly. This will help some of the struggling writers that complain of having "writer's block". They will also add personal comments and their own sentences to make their letters special to their soldier. Crafts are also being purchased to be decorated and mailed out for the fall and winter holidays. They are small little tokens that will hopefully give a smile or two to some soldiers after a long hard day protecting us our country and our freedom. The goal of this project is for our students to become better writers, read and learn about current events in the Time for Kids magazine. In doing so, our students will learn and appreciate more about how important the jobs are that our heroes do by protecting and keeping our country safe. If this project gets funded, it will create lasting memories.
