I remember it like it was yesterday, the Year was 2002 and I was in 7th grade and Ms. Schmertz handed us all one Strathmore 500 Artist Sketchbook and we were told we would spend the entire year decorating and using it for all our projects. Now nearly 20 years later I myself am a 7th grade Art teacher and that sketchbook is one of my prized possessions. I want my students to have the same opportunity to fall in love with art and art-making through having their very own professional artist sketchbook that will keep and cherish for another 20 years as I have done myself. The sketchbook for the class will become almost their journal in which first they will decorate the cover (I choose to collage mine with images of delicious food) and within it, they will do different projects ranging from learning about perspective to designing their own puppets. What is so amazing about these sketchpads is: first, their hardbound covers give a real sense of professionalism and durability to many children who have never had access to such materials. Secondly, it will act as almost a journal or document that will last them a lifetime and they can go back like I often do when I need a good dose of nostalgia to that one project they did with their Art teacher in a year-long past.
