In an age where there are so many ways to receive news from a variety of different mediums, I want my students to have reliable and accessible news sources of current events readily available to them. For this reason, I hope to provide my students with a one year subscription to the Junior Scholastic magazine which offers exactly that. In addition to offering current event materials, my 7th grade team has prioritized developing a reading culture in each of our classes this year. Last year's virtual educational experience had long-term impacts on student learning that may have widened the achievement gap. Centering literacy is one way I hope to build critical thinkers after a challenging academic year. Creating a space where students want to read is one way I hope students buy into our reading culture. Libraries are built intentionally with furniture and aesthetics that make it a place where people want to go and read. With a beautiful new rug and comfortable seats to offer, I hope to build the same kind of space in my classroom. This project will help me build a reading atmosphere that will have a positive, long-term impact on students' learning.
