There is high demand for employees skilled in Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) manufacturing. Manufacturing jobs once consisted of large complex operations broken down into simple, repetitive tasks performed by relatively unskilled individuals, often fresh out of high school. Modern technology has replaced most of these jobs with automated production lines powered by CNC. The 3D scanner will be an integral part of my student’s introduction to CNC. As a career technology instructor I show students that a university degree is not the only path to success. I introduce them to lucrative trades, crafts and professions often ignored in the rush towards college preparation for all. The 3D scanner projects will help demonstrate that there is dignity, respect , pride and lucrative opportunity in skilled trades. The 3D scanner will enable students to reverse engineer projects and provide the basis for tweaking and refining code to control modern manufacturing hardware.
