Last year I led a Nintendo Switch and Esports Club via Zoom when students were doing at-home learning. Students participating in extracurricular activities are less likely to miss school, graduate at a higher rate, are more likely to pay attention in class, and feel better about themselves. Playing video games and participating in Esports can teach valuable skills such as how to work with others, social skills, strategic thinking and planning, how to manage success and failure, and pro-social values. The club I ran last year provided students a chance to socialize with one another and make new friends. Unfortunately, it was limited to students who owned a Nintendo Switch. This year I would like to expand the club, offering students who do not own a Nintendo Switch a chance to participate as well, allowing them to play with each other or with students who do own Switches. Students in my club last year also participated in Esports tournaments competing against students from other schools in our county. I would like to open up those opportunities to more students as well.
