These children are babies and they need to move. With the strict Covid protocols they cannot touch one another and must be distanced. They don't get to wiggle often while learning, as they are expected to learn from 8am until 10:30 am until getting a full yard recess break. They must endure a long 8am to 2:33 pm day. They must wiggle and move at this age. In addition, all children have multiple and very different intelligences. My class is no exception, but it's even more unique. My teaching style involves dancing, singing and a lot of movement. My students thrive on this, because many of them have the need to move in order to attend, which is why the stools are critical. For most of my English language learners, movement helps them process. On a sensory note, I have some students that really need to be soothed and learn in a more sensory way, that's where the soft seats come in. Also, I'm an socially emotional steeped teacher, so I create my own "calming bottles" with the swellable beads on my list. Hence, since students learn in such a multitude of ways, it would be unjust and unethical to deny them of flexible seating. Some cannot help but move, the stools give students the option to move, strengthen their core, and wobble while learning. Teaching in this way ensures equal access for all students! Isn't that the message that we want to give our youngest people? We know their brains are placid, let's help create the best humans we can!
