I work at an alternative school with jr. high boys. Snacks are the biggest motivational tool they all work for! Snacks keep them motivated, allows them to have a break, and keeps them focused throughout the day. A lot of my boys have a hard time staying still and focused on lessons, so fidgets help them keep their focus on long 30 minute lessons. Another huge motivational tool for my students is their free time. They work so hard to enjoy free time in a comfy chair playing games together. Having the boys interact with one another is HUGE for their social and emotional goals. At an alt school they aren't just learning academics they are also learning behavioral skills, coping skills, and social skills. Those all come from bonding and interacting with their peers in an appropriate way during that free time. My students are great boys and deserve the have these things in the classroom to help meet their behavioral and academics goals!
