These books will help my students to see representation of people who like them in stories used during language therapy. Literacy based therapy is so important in the school setting to help develop receptive and expressive language skills. Research has shown stories depicting characters that look like the students, have higher impact and engage students better as well as raise their confidence levels. Mainstream children's books depict predominantly white, main characters and there is often a lack of representation from other cultures. Building a culturally competent library of books will help expose children to both characters that look like them, as well as introduce them to new cultures. This will bring racial equity to my speech room.
