The library at my school is going through changes to help make it more representative of our students. The students at this high school are predominantly students of color, and there are many students who identify as LGBTQ+ as well. Unfortunately, very few of the books that existed in the library reflected those students' lived experiences. We've already seen that the books which have diverse characters are very popular, so adding more diversity and inclusive literature to our collection would really encourage students to read, and develop literacy skills here. I want the library here to be a safe and inclusive space where each student can both find themselves in a book, and discover the story of someone with a different experience than their own.
