We would like to have the award-winning book "Finding Langston" by Lesa Cline-Ransome into the hands of our 5th-grade students for a literature study. As an International Baccalaureate World School, one of our units of study is "Who We Are". This theme allows students the opportunity to inquire into human relationships including families, friends, communities, and cultures; rights, and responsibilities. This book will allow us to put these real-life issues our students can relate to into historical context. "Finding Langston" beautifully explores themes of race, class, post-war American life in the North and South, which will allow our students to gain an understanding of how to deal with complex situations with empathy. This is a story that we know will stay with our students long after they've finished it.
