My first grade students are in a public school in a rural community in Florida. Two thirds of my children come from migrant backgrounds with parents who speak little or no English. Most would fall into a lower or impoverished economic category or description. Yet, despite the lack of background experiences that many other children have, these children come with that same eagerness and curiosity to learn that most children have. Most of the parents want so much for them to do "better." So having materials and activities for them to do just facilitates bringing out that excitement and those smiles.
