It is important to introduce children to multiple genres so that they can find books that relate to their own lives. When students discover connections between stories, to their own world, and to one another, they begin to understand the power that resides between the covers of a book. Book clubs are a great way to introduce new genres. The format allows for rich student-led discussion and exploration. Science fiction books are filled with elements that will encourage students to think deeply and dissect multiple layers of a story. As with all fiction, science fiction can build critical thinking skills and help readers make sense of their world. The novels I am asking for will be used to create book clubs of four to six students. Each child in a group will read a different book. Students will participate in conversations about characters and plots, finding ways in which their books share common threads. Students will be able to read a book they choose, and through dialogue with their group members, they will also be introduced to other novels that might pique their interest. Culminating activities will be completed when students finish their books. Many of the novels are also the first in a series, so readers will have the opportunity to continue their adventures in book two!
