Trout in the classroom is an immersive, hands on project for schools developed by Trout Unlimited. Students work together to help raise trout from the egg phase to adults that can be released into local rivers. Topics covered include environmental health, aquatic animal life cycles, wildlife conservation, environmental management, and water quality analysis. Fly fishing is an essential component of Creede's economy, and the projects efforts will directly contribute to populations on local rivers and streams. The project will also develop an appreciation for the land and waters around them. Many items will be reusable and/or bought in bulk and will provide the same experiences for students for years to come. The aquarium itself will be used to house the project in the classroom and allow students to experience first hand the life cycle of the rainbow trout species. Some items, such as the breeding equipment, will allow the students to get a front row seat of the early life stages of these fish, not usually seen in the wild. Various chemicals and water treatment products will give students the opportunity to participate and take ownership in the project, but also understand chemistry and water quality as it relates to the environment.
