I am a new teacher with a classroom that has a very limited and outdated library. My new 3rd graders have been attending class virtually for the past year and a half and many of them have not yet held a book since the start of the pandemic. I want to make their first experience of looking through a library of books a welcoming and positive one. Adding and improving my classroom library with books that are inclusive will ensure that. We will incorporate some of the books that address race, ethnicity, and sexual identity, into our identity exploration unit. Students will write and share their "I am" statements and draw a self portrait of themselves.
My 3rd graders will have the opportunity to read these diverse books on a daily basis during Readers Workshop. Having the opportunity to read books that include fictional/nonfictional characters with a variety of backgrounds and life circumstances will increase the chances that students will find books that reflect their lives and ultimately boost their love of reading!
