So far, students love seeing their art turn realistic because that's when they finally believe they are artists. Their eyes light up when they notice how adding a cast shadow allows their objects to transform off the page. After I teach them about highlights and shadows, they start to notice how light affects everything around them. It's a glass shattering moment for them. However, they get stuck on making art come to life when only using pencil. They are nervous adding highlights or shadows in color because they believe they can't correct any marks they make.
In this project, I hope to inspire students to use color in their art after I show them how color can help turn a 2D drawing into a 3D drawing. Once students know blues and purples can be used in shadows and yellows and oranges can be used in highlights, they won't want to go back to using just pencil and eraser. The doors to creativity will have opened up to them!
With colored pencils and soft pastels, I can show them different ways to add value to their artwork through blending, hatching, stippling, etc. They will learn multiple ways to create realistic art while using abstract color!
