Currently, students in my classes learn about Earth Science from various magazine articles the teachers have collected and prepared for them. Although these resources provide vocabulary and information, it is extremely difficult for kids to fully understand the differences between rocks, minerals, and fossils without seeing and holding them in their own hands. Learning about how to conduct mineral identification tests from an article is not the same as actually doing it. Sadly, most of our Earth Science unit is very "book based" and I am hoping to bring this information to life by allowing students to touch, smell, and see all the different rock and minerals they can find in the world around them. Without traveling out of the classroom itself, this is the next best way to observe and understand Earth science.
