How does it feel when you're required to stay at your desk for the whole day and are sitting far from something that is important for you to see? I doubt it's very enjoyable. My students need a large area rug to collaborate with classmates and experience a variety of lessons each day. Most of the direct instruction in my classroom is done on the board at the front of the room. This rug will let my students sit in one area together and will allow them to participate in lessons easily. Students will have adequate space needed in order to stay engaged as they regularly participate in partner talks. To quote Boushey and Moser in The Daily 5: Second Edition, "three of the biggest payoffs of a gathering space are behavior management through proximity, enhancing deeper thinking through accountable talk with partners, and the elimination of the convenient distractions kept inside desks." Thank you for helping me create a space where my students can collaborate and learn!
