Our learning commons at our school serve our students in grades kindergarten - fifth grade as a media center, a maker space, and an area for our students to come to play games, problem solve and enjoy being kids. During these uncertain times, we are noticing that the social-emotional well-being of our children has suffered greatly. Many of our students have been quarantined at home, and they have not had the opportunity to enjoy making new friends, enjoying playing games, and enjoy being carefree kids. Our classroom teachers are charged with filling in the learning gaps our students have experienced and pushing our students to the next levels. As the teacher in the learning commons, I have the unique opportunity to provide students with opportunities that focus on their social and emotional wellbeing, while also giving them as many opportunities as possible to engage with others and build relationships. Jenga provides the perfect opportunity for my students to have fun with fellow classmates, while problem-solving and strategizing. It appears to be just a game, but it is so much more! It is a game that works on eye-hand coordination, manual dexterity, strategizing, and precision. Jenga is also age-appropriate and LOVED by all the different grade levels that I teach, including my students with special needs. I am on a quest to help my students reconnect with the school and reconnect with their peers. What better way to do that than providing them a little joy through Jenga!
