Comfortable, flexible seating promotes excitement for students when it comes to independent reading time (IRT). Silent, sustained reading is where students practice their skills with books they’ve chosen. Cushy chairs will allow students to get happy about IRT! Books that celebrate the beauty of diversity are also necessary. Students want to read books with characters that look and feel like them. I’ve included an array of books, from 1st grade level up to 5th. This should give everyone in the room a chance to read something good! Picture books will allow me to do read alouds more frequently!
