A Montessori education is one that follows the child. The teachers in the classroom meet each and every child where they are. Working with kindergarten and first-grade children, I find that the children are working on strengthening their fine motor skills. In the classroom you will find materials pertaining to life skills, we call this area "practical life." The Matching Lock Set, Screwdriver Board, and Weaving Board are materials that will be housed in practical life. These are all life skills that will not only help with their fine motor skills but will also help with focus and concentration. The Nesting Trays will be used to carry the works from the shelf to their work area. They will need to use that same focus and concentration to get their work to its destination safely without dropping and/or spilling. These young children become excited about language and are starting to form, make, and sound out 3 and 4 letter words. The Wooden Letter Alphabet Tracing Board and Matching Letter Flash Cards are two items that will encourage confidence and independence in the students. The last two items are geared to encourage their creative side, Magnetic Tile Marble Run and Wooden Sorting Stacking Balancing Stone Rocks. It is always fun to see how these items will be used. Will houses to made? Possibly forts or castles? Will they be able to stand them up to build with or lay them down? How high will they be able to stack the rocks? Will they use them as something else?
