Many of my students have never experienced or had the opportunity to play disc golf, let a lone know what disc golf is. My students come from low income families in an urban school district. Throughout the school day, there are 15 physical education classes between the middle school and high school that average 30 students per class. The middle school and high school share not only physical education teachers but equipment as well. It is very difficult to maintain and keep up with equipment when it gets touched by roughly 450 students a semester. Not only do we get to teach the students a new activity, it is an activity that they can participate in the rest of their lives that is fairly inexpensive. The physical education department also teams up with the Unified/Special Olympic program. This allows students to learn advocating skills, sports, and teamwork. Currently, these students are enjoying experiences with basketball, volleyball, football, and fishing because of programs like this. Additional equipment will allow for additional opportunities.
