In my Intensive Reading class, students are given 25 minutes each class to practice reading a book of their choice. This time offered students the ability to explore personal interests and engage with a topic of their choosing, all while building valuable reading skills that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. By supporting this project, my students will have access to a much larger assortment of reading materials from my classroom library, offering them a more diverse and representative set of texts for them to dive into. My students are each incredibly unique and have a desire to learn more about their world, a desire that literacy can help satisfy. Reading can open so many doors for them, and push them to think outside of themselves and focus on their communities and fellow students.
